KEUR MARIAMA PROJECT A FLUORINATED WATER PURIFICATION
Destination
Kaolack region / Rural community of Ndiaffate
Description of the Problem
High fluorine in drilling water, looking for a treatment adapted by tight nanofiltration.
Overall Objective
Distribution in drinking water in each village served by the drilling.
Target Groups
2,000 people in 9 localities.

Justification of the Project
The problem: Extensive drilling of the region of the Saloum in Senegal distribute water with a very strong fluorine content, that can generate the fluorose dental and bone. This public health issue affects many drilling not only in Senegal, but in other countries of Africa (Niger, Mali, etc.) and of the world.
Adapted to the local situation and inexpensive treatment is possible by tight nanofiltration. Keur Mariama drilling was chosen as a pilot project, to then be extended by extensive drilling replication.
An experimental station of nanofiltration of Keur Majumder has given very good results (98% retention of fluorine and 95% abatement in conductivity.)
The current project is to pass from the experimental stage to execution of 2 stations of filtration with 2 networks to bring water filtree in the villages served by the drilling.
Water quality
Characteristics of Water before filtration: Ndiafatte drilling water contains 5 mg/l of fluorine agenda and therefore exceed the maximum level of 1.5 mg/l recommended by WHO
It contains also about 400 mg/l of chloride and sodium which exceeds the criteria of acceptability and taste also recommended by who (respectively 250 mg/l and 200 mg/l).
Characteristics of water after filtration : The solution is to purify the water by reverse osmosis low pressure (also called nanofiltration). Once treated, the water meets the potability guidelines recommended by who. Purified water is disinfected before distribution to guard against contamination of water during its storage or distribution.

The two-unit capacity
Connected to photovoltaic generator, each unit can produce up to 4000 litres of clean, drinking per day and up to 12000 liters water when it is running on the network or a generator.
The Pall Aria Pure system also includes batteries that allow standalone operation and temporary when sunshine is insufficient (morning, evening, cloudy weather) or in case of emergency.
Costs of water
Our minimize the cost of treatment, only the drinking and cooking water is processed .
Price of the raw water distributed to the hydrant: 10 FCFA bathes (25 l)
Price of filtered water fountain specific Terminal: 50 FCFA the 20-litre can.
Budget and Financing
Overall cost of the project: €220,000
corresponding to:
-Infrastructure (units, solar panels, spare parts kits, work, distribution networks).
-Support activities (outreach, batteries that allow operation training).
-Costs of implementation of the project (preliminary studies, provisional filtration driver), missions, coordination, transport, mounting, set en route.
-Administrative fees.
Cost of a filtration unit with solar panels: €33,700 TTC
